What's It All About?
LGBT+ International Students have special needs that are not usually catered for in university or college support networks.
Most young people who go to university or college experience some difficult or uncomfortable situations involving their sexuality. Any student who feels like they don't fit in to the mainstream heterosexual community will have many challenges to deal with.
Most Australian colleges and universities have special programs and services in place to support LGBT+ students - but for LGBT+ International Students, the challenges are not always realised by campus staff or by their domestic counterparts.
LGBT+ International Students will have to face all the same challenges of a domestic student, plus more. For many LGBT+ International Students, the openness of many gay, lesbian and other queer people in Australia can seem confronting and difficult to adjust to. We know that for a large number of international students do not feel comfortable, and even afraid, to come out to their classmates, teaching staff and other people who they have to engage with on a daily basis.
LISTEN was created to provide LGBT+ International Students with access to a range of professional and confidential services specifically tailored to their needs. LISTEN is an acronym for Embark Migration's LGBT+ International Student Trusted Expert Network.
Through the LISTEN program, gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, HIV-Positive and other non-identified International Students can receive professional support and guidance which is not provided through university, college, education agents or social networks.
